My first trip to France/Mi primer viaje a Francia

My first trip to France was to the Loire Valley. The Loire a Velo, which is the path that follows the river is flat, stunning and like the majority of Velo routes in France, traffic-free. Cycling in France is great, as there are many cycle routes called Velo and if there is no Velo route and you have to cycle on minor roads, there is hardly any traffic. The food is great, and the landscape is beautiful. After my first trip, I have been to France many more times. The only problem for me is that I don't speak French. I should learn, I know. 

My first Warmshowers hosts offered to pick me up at the airport, I always find that so generous because apart from offering their place to stay, they are also offering you their time, driving to airports is time-consuming and in general not a very pleasurable experience. They were there waiting for me,  they had this yummy lunch ready for me and whilst having lunch we had a really nice chat. They were both retired. The majority of retired cyclists that I've met, retired as early as they could to cycle and follow their many other hobbies. Usually, Warmshowers have really interesting lives, apart from cycling they have the most amazing hobbies and they are environmentally very conscious I have met bee keepers, wood carvers, artists, writers, adventurers, photographers and many more. A lot of them are also involved with different types of NGOs, basically highly empathetic people. I was going to cycle for a week so did not bring my bike. I reckon that if your trip is less than ten days it is not worth taking your bike, as hiring it is cheaper than the plane tickets for the bike. You can hire a really good one almost in every city in Europe. The only drawback is that you have to give it back at the same place unless the company has a shop at your destination. For the Loire Valley this is not a problem as there is a train that goes along the river and bikes are allowed so can always cycle one way and then take the train back, that's what I did.

My hosts had adopted four children and now they were grown up and independent, shame I did not meet any of them as with those amazing parents they must have been really nice and interesting. I stayed in a room that they normally used to host refugees as they volunteered for an organisation that helped refugees. After lunch, they recommended places to visit and offered me their bike as I hadn't yet collected mine. 

I left and met with another Warmshowers host who offered to host me on my way back as I was flying home from the same airport. She also said that she could cycle with me for a few days along the river. The next morning we met at the bike hiring shop, I collected my bike, which was better than mine by the way and off we went. She was a really experienced cyclist who had been all over the world with her folding bike. The advantage of cycling with a folding bike is that it fits inside a normal suitcase, she had been with to Patagonia on unpaved roads wild camping for weeks, with no problems at all. She is also a sailor so sometimes she cycles carrying her sailing equipment and then she goes on a boat. Having a tiny amount of luggage she managed to carry all she needed. She was going to cross the Atlantic to South America on a sailboat. Definitely amazing but not in my plans. On the second day, her friend joined us. He had a different luggage-style, he carried all his stuff on a trailer, again... advantages and disadvantages.  Hence, for a bit, it was three of us, which was unusual for me because I am used to cycling alone but being with somebody else is also very nice for a while. They left after three days and I continued on my own, met some wonderful Warmshowers hosts and when I got to the end of my route I took the train back and my host was waiting for me at the station, we took the bike back to the shop and went to her house. She made a really nice meal and we had a very long chat about her adventures which dwarfed mine by miles. She is such an inspiration, after I met her she'd been on her own to Japan, Madagascar, Mexico and many more places I love to follow her posts on Facebook. 

A few years later I happened to be in the same place and contacted her to ask if I could stay at hers, she said that she wasn't going to be there but I was welcome to stay, she left the key in a secret place and I stayed there, that is an incredibly generous thing to do. But in the world of Warmshowers it is not unusual, I have stayed in a few places where the hosts weren't there and they left the key or if that wasn't possible they arranged for me to stay at their relatives' and friends or stayed in their gardens. As said before, Warmshowers restore your faith in humanity

Mi primer viaje a Francia fue al Valle del Loira. El Loira a Velo, que es el camino que bordea río, es plano, muy bonito y, como la mayoría de las rutas de Velo en Francia, sin trafico. Montar bicicleta en Francia es genial, ya que hay muchas rutas de bicicleta llamadas Velo y, si no hay ninguna ruta Velo y toca ir por carreteras secundarias, el tráfico es muy poco. La comida es excelente y el paisaje hermoso. Después de mi primer viaje, he estado en Francia muchas más veces. Mi único problema es que no hablo francés...ya se que deberia aprender.

Mis primeros anfitriones de Warmshowers se ofrecieron a recogerme en el aeropuerto. Esto siempre me ha parecido muy generoso ya que además de ofrecer su casa también te ofrecen su tiempo. Conducir hasta los aeropuertos normalmente toma bastante tiempo y, en general, no es una experiencia muy placentera. Ellos estaban allí esperándome,  en la casa habian preparado un almuerzo delicioso y, mientras almorzábamos, tuvimos una tertulia muy agradable. Ambos estaban jubilados, la mayoría de los ciclistas jubilados que he conocido se han jubilado tan pronto como han podido para dedicarse al ciclismo y a sus otros multiples pasatiempos. Normalmente, los anfitriones de Warmshowers tienen vidas muy interesantes; además de la bicicleta, tienen unos pasatiempos increíbles y son muy conscientes de nuestro impacto en el medio ambiente. He conocido a apicultores, ebanistas, artistas, escritores, aventureros, fotógrafos y muchos más. Muchos de ellos también están involucrados en diferentes tipos de ONG, básicamente son personas muy empáticas. Como mi viaje iba a durar una semana, decidí no llevar mi bicicleta conmigo sino alquilar una. En mi experiencia,  si el viaje dura menos de diez días, no vale la pena transportar  la bicicleta. Normalmente, en casi todas las ciudades de Europa se pueden alquilar bicicletas de ciclo turismo muy buena y a un precio que por 10 dias equivale al precio que hay que pagar para transportar la bicicleta en el avion. El único inconveniente es hay que devolverla en el mismo lugar a menos que la empresa tenga una sucursal en el destino. Para el Valle del Loira esto no es un problema, ya que hay un tren que va a lo largo del río y que permite transportar bicicletas, así que siempre se puede ir en bicicleta de ida y luego tomar el tren de vuelta, eso fue lo que yo hice.

Mis anfitriones habían adoptado cuatro niños que en ese momento ya eran adultos e independientes. Fue una pena no haberlos conocido ya que con esos padres maravillosos seguramente tambien hubieran sido muy agradables e interesantes. Mi habitacion normalmente la utilizaban para alojar refugiados temporalmente, ya que ellos trabajaban como voluntarios para una organización que ayudaba a refugiados. Después de comer, me recomendaron lugares para visitar y me ofrecieron su bicicleta para que pudiera recorre la ciudad mas facilemente, ya que iba a recoger la mia al dia siguiente.

Sali a visitar la ciudad, yo habia quedado en encontrarme con la anfitriona de Warmshowers que se ofreció a recibirme en mi camino de regreso, ya que yo volvia a mi casa desde el mismo aeropuerto. Una señora genial, ella me dijo que podía acompañarme los tres primeros dias de mi viaje. A la mañana siguiente nos encontramos en la tienda de alquiler de bicicletas, recogí mi bicicleta, que era mejor que la mía, por cierto, y nos fuimos. Ella es una ciclista con mucha experiencia que ha viajado por todo el mundo con su bicicleta plegable. La ventaja de la bicicleta plegable es que cabe dentro de una maleta normal, ella fue con esa bicicleta a la Patagonia en carreteras de tierra acampando al aire libre durante semanas, no tuvo ningún problema. También es navegante, así que a veces va en bicicleta y lleva su equipo de navegación, cuando llega a su destino dobla su bici, la monta en el barco y se va a navegar, usualmente en un velero. Con una pequeña cantidad de equipaje, logra llevar todo lo que necesita y dentro de sus planes estaba cruzar el Atlántico hacia Suramérica en un velero. La navegacion es una gran aventura pero algo que definitivamente yo no haría. El segundo día, un amigo de ella se unió a nosotras. El cargaba su equipaje de manera diferente, llevaba todas sus cosas en un remolque, esto como todo tiene ventajas y desventajas. Durante dos dias pedaleamos los tres, lo cual es inusual para mí porque yo estoy acostumbrada a ir en bicicleta sola, pero estar con otras personas también es muy agradable por un tiempo. A los tres días ellos se regresaron y yo continué por mi cuenta, me conoci varios anfitriones maravillosos de Warmshowers. Cuando llegué al final de mi ruta tomé el tren de regreso y mi anfitriona me estaba esperando en la estación, devolvimos bicicleta a la tienda y fuimos a su casa. Ella preparó una comida muy rica y tuvimos una conversacion bastante larga sobre sus aventuras que eclipsaron las mías totalmente. Ella es una gran fuente de inspiración, a los meses de yo haberla conocido fue para Japón, luego Madagascar, México y muchos otros lugares. Las publicaciones de sus viajes en Facebook son geniales.

Unos años despues, viajé al mismo lugar y la contacté para preguntarle si podía quedarme en su casa, ella me dijo que no iba a estar pero que podía quedarme, dejó la llave en un lugar secreto y me quedé en su casa por una noche.  Estos gestos tan generosos son frecuentes en el mundo del ciclismo, especialmente en Warmshowers. Varias veces me ha pasado que contacto a un anfitrion y ellos no estaran alli en la fecha que yo planeo llegar y me han dejado la llave o, si eso no es posible, han contactado sus familiares y amigos para que yo me quede con ellos o he acampado en sus jardines. Como he dicho muchas veces, el mundo de Warmshowers te devuelve la fe en la humanidad.
